Blogosphere Loses a Voice for Civilization: Chris Monson of snaggletoothie of the Loyal Opposition

Christopher David Monson, 1948-2011.

We grieve the loss of our dear snaggletoothie of the Loyal Opposition--THE BLOG of "NO"--who passed away on Friday afternoon, January 28, 2011. From Pat Austin via Yukio Ngaby comes the sad news that "Chris suffered a seizure Monday, fell and hit his head, and by the end of the week was in a coma." Chris suffered from spinal injuries that made it difficult for him to walk and that put an end to his nursing career.

Chris was the model of a civilized man: a man of compassion, incisive intelligence, and wide-ranging interests. He was a Conservative political observer of keen insight. He loved music of all kinds, from Beethoven to Glenn Miller to Patsy Cline to the Carolina Chocolate Drops. Snaggletoothie's blog header was a gallery of ever-changing images from around the world. Beautiful women and classic cars did not escape his notice, nor his posts. The quotes that Chris published mirrored the gentleness of his nature. Here is one that he posted recently:
Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy--meditate on these things. (Philippians 4:8)
Those are words that Chris obviously lived by.

Chris's love of literature led him to publish a second blog devoted to great literature from Homer to Shakespeare to Faulkner, which he called The Chinese Jar.

This is the motto that Chris posted on snaggletoothie: "Because someone must stand between civilization and chaos and say, 'No more today, thanks.'"

Chris would have been 63 on April 1.

His father publishes the blog Prune Picker, where Chris's friends and followers can leave messages of condolence.
