Transforming a Young Adult’s Room

When children transition to young adulthood, there are many changes that occur in their lives which most often than not affects their living spaces necessitating a change in their interior décor. The changes they effect usually have the stamp of their new found identity and freedom. Since most young adults are either still in college or starting out in their first job, sticking to a budget is very important. This however does not mean that style and class has to be compromised. A bedsitter can be transformed to look like a full apartment with just a few minor adjustments. For starters, the walls and ceiling should be painted a neutral colour to give the illusion of space and a well lit room.

Tackling Young Adults’ Storage Issues

The bed should then be placed lengthwise at the centre of the longest wall, complete with a head board and foot board. Adding several pillows on the bed will make it look like a sofa. These should also be in a neutral colour for the same reason of creating space and light. Storage issues may be tackled by using end tables that have drawers or shelves which will serve two purposes. These when place at both ends of the bed will make the room look more grown up. Ottomans are great as footstools or coffee tables and can greatly handle the storage issue for a young adult when they have lids and act as trunks. They can also be used as extra seating for guests.

A young adult’s pad is never complete without an entertainment centre, placed right in front of the bed. Choosing one with doors and shelves will reduce clutter by storing CDs and even a mini fridge. Placing mirrors and artwork will also increase the illusion of space while also maturing the room’s interior décor.

Planning a Family Christmas Party

Everyone loves a family Christmas party. This is the time of the year that all family members are available and everyone can pitch in for the preparations of this annual event. The organizational skills of the young adult back from college can come in handy in preparing for a spectacular family gathering. The young adult is at a stage where they are exercising their new found freedom and so giving them this task will show that there is trust in their abilities which is great for their morale and self confidence. However, it is advisable to give guidelines like a guest list and to supervise their efforts every step of the way so that they do not go overboard in the planning.

Young Adult’s Party Planning Skills

To get started, prepare the guest list early in advance and have the young adult call them up and confirm attendance. This will free you up to do other things like preparing the Christmas dinner menu while at the same time making the young adult feel useful. If the party is potluck, the young adult can also confirm what each guest will be bringing from the set menu. Their creative skills will come in handy in making personalized invitation cards if they are part of the plan.

Next comes the fun part, party decorations! Young adults can be quite skillful in setting up the party mood by using creative party decoration ideas which may also include setting up for fun party games that the whole family can enjoy. They can create these at home or shop for them if they are in the budget thereby increasing their financial planning sense and responsibility. A successful party speaks volumes about the host and involving the young adult in the planning and execution of a great party strengthens the family bond.

Young Adult Decor

As the teenager transitions to a young adult, it is time for a little more interior decorating to transform their room into a more mature one. The beauty of this venture is that at this stage they have formed their identity and they know what they want to represent this, meaning they can be involved in the decision making and thereby taking the load off of the parent somewhat. Again some of the items in the room hold sentimental value and will have to be incorporated into the new décor, which is a money-saving technique. The furniture may just need a fresh coat of paint to be transformed to fit the young adult’s new décor style.

Restyling a Young Adult’s Bedroom

A little rearranging of the furniture will transform a room to freshness instead of getting a whole new set of furniture especially if the furniture is still usable. Young adult’s preferences are bound to change from time to time during this self discovery phase as they look to establish their identity and freedom so it is wise to not overspend and look for cheaper alternatives instead. This goes also for the wall, where wallpaper will be a wise and cheaper choice that can be changed at minimal cost as opposed to paint.

Young adults may not be as fussy as teenagers and it is usually easy to convince them to buy cheap and unique accessories from garage sales and other thrift shops. The bedding for a young adult in most cases is the same as for a mature adult’s bedroom so it is not difficult to find a suitable set. Drapes, lamps and throw cushions can also be used to accentuate a young adult’s interior decorating stylishly and at an affordable cost since these items can effortlessly be interchanged between rooms in a house.

Decorating for a Young Adult

Interior decorating ideas for young adults are as unique and diverse as the individual personalities. This is an exciting stage in life where they want to stamp their identity and newly discovered independence in all they do. However the decorating themes differ across genders, especially when it comes to colours. For a male young adult the theme will most likely centre on their favourite activity for example, sport, art, music or drama. Young female adults are on the other hand quite particular about colours and soft furnishings like draperies, throw cushions and even floral arrangements. There are several ways of incorporating stylish and functional decorating ideas to make a young adults room uniquely theirs.

Unique Colours for Young Adults

When it comes to colour most male young adults are more comfortable with patterns than loud colours. Appropriate colours would be black and white, which are always a classic, incorporated with some grey and black trimming in draperies or bed linen. Other colours are blue, green and plaid or brown in different shades done in bold patterns like interlocking circles. For young women brightly coloured throws or area rugs do the trick as do beautiful and functional oriental paper lanterns. For the young man the walls are usually in a laid back colour like brown or purple, while for young women the walls can be as bright as lilac or orange with matching accents.

Most young adults study on the floor or bed, however a desk with space for a computer incorporated into the décor furniture will encourage them to be more organized. Young adults like hosting their friends in their rooms and a sofa, coffee table and television in an area separated by a functional bookshelf should be considered. To get a young adult interested in interior decorating involve them in decorating their own room.
