Thoughts :The Michael Chorost Interview

Thoughts :The Michael Chorost Interview

I’ve been
performing this writing factor for quite a long time, particularly given that I’m not that old. I’ve interviewed a wide range of folks. Producers. Wrestlers. Cage fighters. Financial Advisers. But in no way somebody that created me feel in any way nervous about the high quality of my questions and investigation. Then the interview went ahead, parts 1, two and 3 becoming behind those links for your perusal.

I was sent the link to the New York Times review of Mike’s book, World Wide Mind. He sounded
truly interesting, so I pinged his publicist. Didn’t feel anything of it - it’s crucial not to, since the vast majority of interview queries you send out are rarely ever returned having a positive note attached. Nevertheless, I was given his e-mail as well as the okay, and I began searching into his writing in a greater level of depth

Depth is
some thing I’d use to describe the way Mike thinks, and what he thinks about. Envision having one of your two most essential data sources, biologically speaking, taken away from you. Deaf and blind individuals (and especially the combination of the two) do not have it effortless, and you only require remember that all sign-language content on British tv is shown at 2-3AM on a Tuesday night to know that.

Luckily for Mike, he had the
amazing chance to obtain a cochlear implant, and as a result can now hear well enough to talk to me for the best component of an hour on the phone. That, to me, is justification enough that those who aren’t embracing new technology are seriously holding back the possible of the human race. We have often, usually defined our own era by the technology we have utilized, developed, and given to future generations so that they might boost it further or invent their own.

We live in a world where communication is key.
In the event you can’t see, that’s really fairly a significant quantity of input lost, in the age of the internet. We communicate, the vast majority of the time, via text. I speak to my other half via SMS, IM, even Skype, when we’re not together. We call each and every other. And maybe in the next fifty years technology may enable us to basically hear those words prior to they’re typed, or said. It’s exciting, and I’d like to, within the style of Chorost himself, conduct a thought experiment, with you, the reader.

Say we have a Blackberry
idea phone that monitors heart rates. You get a message from your boss asking to see you for a meeting on the Monday morning. It’s a Sunday afternoon, and your BPM’s been low all day. Your boss will see that BPM spike. Is that too far for you? Would you block your heart-rate off? Would you even use the phone?

Then
again, what about medical reasons? Could a call to, say, NHS direct be much more informative since they’d know you’ve got a significantly elevated heart-rate, and have sent an ambulance to your location even as you’re listing other symptoms?

The increased sharing of personal
information will likely lead to better communication, and much less privacy. But would you accept the advantages given the sacrifice? Some thing to take into consideration. Then again, soon after reading the interview, if you’ve not got a lot to take into consideration, I’d be surprised

Google Enables Additional Storage Purchase For Google Apps

Google Enables Additional Storage Purchase For Google Apps

Google's reliability level definitely took a hit over the past week. The company managed to lose the emails of around 150,000 clients, but if you still trust the Big G with your data, you now have more options than ever when it comes to hosted apps. Enterprise and business users who have turned to Google for Google Apps now have the ability to buy far more storage. User Managed Storage options will be made available to all Google Apps customers in the coming days, which is described as a service that allows users to purchase more storage space when they fill the allotted quota on their personal Google Accounts.

This means that Google Docs, Picasa Web Albums, and photos from Blogger can be stored on the newly available disc space, with users that upload lots of files to Google Docs, sync their Office documents to the cloud using Google Cloud Connect for Microsoft Office, or store and share pictures using Picasa or Blogger could take advantage. Pricing for the new data storage is the same as for Personal accounts, with an extra 20GB per year running you $5/year and an extra 16TB running $4096 per year.

The User Managed Storage service is enabled or disabled by the domain administrator, and the end user purchases additional storage using his or her Google Checkout account. Additional storage added using User Managed Storage cannot be pooled or transferred to another Google Apps user account and cannot be used for Gmail. Data stored using User Managed Storage is subject to the same ownership policy as other data in the Google Apps account. Honestly, the chance of Google losing your data is far less than the chance your single RAID drive will melt, so that's just a little food for thought.

NASA's Newest Climate Satellite to Launch Friday

NASA's Newest Climate Satellite to Launch Friday

The Glory satellite's Taurus XL rocket stands on Space Launch Complex 576-E at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

NASA's newest satellite to study Earth's climate is poised to blast off in the wee hours of Friday (March 4) after a week of delays due to technical problems.

The climate-monitoring Glory satellite is now set to launch from California's Vandenberg Air Force Base on Friday at 2:09:43 a.m. PST (1009:43 GMT). A Taurus XL rocket built by the rocket manufacturer Orbital Sciences will launch the satellite

NASA initially planned to launch the Glory mission on Feb. 23, but called off the attempt just 15 minutes before liftoff due to a technical malfunction with the satellite's Taurus XL rocket. A malfunctioning computer was sending launch controllers incorrect information on the rocket's status, NASA officials said at the time.

"Those issues have been resolved," NASA officials said in a statement this week.

The $424 million Glory mission is aimed at studying how radiation from the sun, along with small particles called aerosols, affect Earth's atmosphere and climate. Aerosols can be natural – created by desert dust and volcanoes – or can have manmade origins such as air pollution

Glory carries two main instruments and is expected to study Earth's atmosphere and climate for about three years while orbiting about 438 miles (705 kilometers) above the planet. [FAQ: Inside NASA's Climate-Watching Glory Mission]

The satellite weighs about 1,157 pounds (525 kilograms). It is just over 6 feet (nearly 2 meters) tall and 4.6 feet (1.4 meters) wide, making it about the height of a tall adult human and as wide as an oil barrel.

Glory is not the only satellite riding into space aboard the Taurus XL rocket.

The booster is also carrying three small nanosatellites, called Cubesats, which were designed and created by university and college students, NASA officials said. The tiny satellites are launching as part of NASA's Educational Launch of Nanosatellites program

HOUSTON – Astronauts on the shuttle Discovery will put the final NASA touch on the International Space Station today (March 1) when they add a storage module that will act as a big space closet for the orbiting lab.

The module, formally known as the Permanent Multipurpose Module, or PMM, will provide much-needed storage space on the station to warehouse equipment and other spare components.

The module, which is named Leonardo and is the size of a small bus, has been packed inside Discovery's cargo bay since the shuttle blasted off last week. The shuttle is delivering the space closet as its final contribution to the massive International Space Station before being retired along with the rest of NASA's shuttle fleet later this year

A closet in space

Discovery's astronaut crew will get an early start to the day, with the robotics operations for the removal of the new closet module from shuttle's payload bay set to begin at 8:08 a.m. EST (1308 GMT).

The Permanent Multipurpose Module is about 21 feet (6.4 meters) long and 15 feet (4.5 meters) wide. It was one of three cargo-carrying Multipurpose Logistics Modules built for NASA by the Italian Space Agency and was delivered to the U.S. agency in 1998. [Infographic: A New Closet for the Space Station]

Discovery's current mission is the eighth flight of the now PMM module to the space station. The module made its first flight in 2001. For this flight, engineers have added some extra debris shielding, power systems and other gear to outfit the module for a permanent stay on the space station.

Discovery's crew will begin installing the station closet module at 9:48 a.m. EST (1448 GMT) – the job is expected to take about an hour. The PMM will be permanently attached to the bottom of the space station on the Earth-facing side of NASA's Unity node.

This space closet is the final American contribution to the assembly of the multinational laboratory.

We're bringing the assembly of the station to a close," shuttle astronaut Mike Barratt told reporters in an in-flight news briefing held yesterday (Feb. 27). "We're bringing the last U.S. module here, so this mission kind of marks a turning point where from now on, we're mostly using the station to get science, and a lot of engineering know-how. So, there's a lot that we're learning up here. It's a really magnificent place."

No free rides into space

The station's closet module is not arriving at the space station empty-handed. It is packed with about 6,500 pounds (over 2,900 kilograms) of cargo, including a spare treadmill and spare components for the station's thermal control and water management systems.

Also tucked away inside the module is a dexterous humanoid robot that will become a permanent resident on the space station.

The robot, called Robonaut 2, hitched a ride to the station onboard Discovery and is part of a technology demonstration by NASA and General Motors to assess the potential role of robot assistants on the space station.

With the impending retirement of NASA's space shuttle fleet, the station will lose the enormous cargo-carrying capability of the orbiters. The last few shuttle missions are intended to stock up the station as much as possible before the shuttles are grounded.

But, a separate problem also exists on the space station, and after 10 years of being continuously inhabited by humans, the laboratory is running out of extra storage space. The extra storage module is expected to help with this problem.

Once the module is installed, the astronauts will also be able to use the space to conduct scientific experiments.

After the storage room is attached to the station, the module will be pressurized so the astronauts can go inside later today to prepare to unpack its contents.

The shuttle and station crew will now have an extra day to transfer cargo to and from the PMM, as Discovery's mission management team decided yesterday (Feb. 28) to extend the STS-133 mission by one day.

This story was updated at 6:37 p.m. ET.

HOUSTON – A pair of spacewalking astronauts working outside the International Space Station zoomed through their mission's first spacewalk today (Feb. 28) despite a system failure that temporarily shut down the orbiting lab's robotic arm while someone was riding it.

Discovery shuttle astronauts Steven Bowen and Alvin Drew were outside the space station working with a huge ammonia pump – a refrigerator-size piece of the station's cooling system – when the robotic arm went offline. Bowen, stuck holding the ammonia pump at the end of the 57-foot (17-meter) robotic arm, simply had to wait it out

"I'm fine as long as it's not too much longer," Bowen said.

Turns out, he didn't have to wait too long. Soon, crewmates inside the station fired up a backup system.

"I've got a hot-shot station crew that moved this robotic work station in a second," shuttle astronaut Michael Barratt of NASA radioed the spacewalkers.

Stuck on a station arm

The robotics system glitch occurred inside the station's seven-window Cupola module, which gives robotic arm operators panoramic views of the orbiting lab's exterior while moving its robotic arm. It shut down as station commander Scott Kelly and Barratt were maneuvering Bowen to his next worksite.

Kelly and Barratt quickly moved to a twin work station in the Discovery Laboratory and were able to resume their work after only a short delay. [Inside and Out: The International Space Station]

"We're only 15 minutes down, so that was a nice, quick recovery from that," said Discovery astronaut Nicole Stott, who helped choreograph the spacewalkers.

The delay pushed the spacewalkers about 20 minutes behind schedule, but Bowen and Drew managed to make up some of that time during later tasks.

Robotics officers here at NASA's Johnson Space Center were eventually able to get the Cupola work station back up and running, and kept it in a back-up mode for the rest of the spacewalk.

Space in a bottle?

Aside from the robotics control shutdown, the first spacewalk of Discovery's STS-133 mission went relatively smooth. A second spacewalk is set for Wednesday (March 2).

Today's spacewalk ended at 5:20 p.m. EST (2220 GMT) for a total of 6 hours and 34 minutes of orbital work.

Bowen and Drew installed a power extension cable, moved the broken ammonia pump to a new storage point, attached a wedge under one of the station's exterior cameras and performed other maintenance activities.

Drew even captured some of the vacuum of space in a metal bottle for a science experiment sponsored by Japan's space agency. The container will be returned to Earth at the end of Discovery's STS-133 mission.

Inside Discovery, Stott played the song "Message in a Bottle" by the Police to commemorate the occasion.

Big spaceships, bigger space station

While working outside, Bowen and Drew caught some unique views of the space station, which is currently home to an international collection of spacecraft from four different space fleets.

The spaceship mix includes: a European cargo ship called the Automated Transfer Vehicle 2 (ATV), a Japanese cargo vessel known as HTV-2, a Russian cargo ship, two Russian Soyuz crew capsules and the shuttle Discovery.

"I've decided the HTV and ATV are both big," Bowen joked as he stood at the tip of the station's robotic arm to retrieve the broken cooling pump module.

Today's spacewalk was Bowen's sixth and the first for Drew.

Bowen, a veteran spacewalker, was a last-minute crew replacement for astronaut Timothy Kopra, who was the STS-133 mission's lead spacewalker. Kopra was injured in a bicycle accident less than six weeks before Discovery's launch, forcing him to sit out on the orbiter's historic final flight.

Kopra remained involved in today's spacewalk, however, by providing support from mission control here at the Johnson Space Center.

"You're a good man for the job," Kopra radioed to Bowen prior to the start of the spacewalk.

At the end of the spacewalk, Kopra was one of the first people to congratulate the two spacewalkers on a successful outing. He especially congratulated rookie spacewalker Drew.

"Congratulations on a stellar job on your first spacewalk," Kopra told Drew. "Good job, dude."

Drew also became the 200th person in history to work in the vacuum of space, according to NASA officials.

Shortly after Bowen and Drew returned inside the space station, Mission Control radioed the station and shuttle crews to say that Discovery's STS-133 mission will be extended an extra day.

The extra day will give the crew the opportunity to complete more work on a storage module that will be attached to the station's Unity node tomorrow

Sains & Teknologi Robot NASA Gagal Tuntaskan Misi Luar Angkasa

Robot NASA Gagal Tuntaskan Misi Luar Angkasa

Motorola 'Flagship' Honeycomb Tablet to Ship Sans Flash

Will Brits who choose to splash out on Motorola's 10in Android tablet, Xoom, be able to view Adobe Flash-encoded content? Americans won't.

According to US network operator Verizon, the Xoom's Flash support is "expected Spring 2011", and not when the tablet goes on sale on this coming Thursday, 24 February.

The omission would be of small consequence had not so many Android tablet makers chortled so loudly that their offerings deliver "the full web experience" - code for Flash support - because their chief rival, Apple's iPad, infamously does not.
Xoom Flash

Motorola will be selling the Xoom in the UK through Carphone Warehouse, but since the tablet isn't expected here until some time in Q2, it should have Flash on board at launch.

The sound you can hear is a host of CW and Motorola UK staffers touching wood all at the same time.

To be fair, Motorola is not the first tablet maker to face such a Flash fail.

Toshiba's first tablet, the Folio 100, was dropped by exclusive UK seller Dixons because it didn't do Flash. It has now gained Flash support - a feature manufacturers and retailers will tell you is essential for UK sales success - and will be relaunched next month.

Speaking of Dixons, a mole tells us that its Vega tablet has suffered from Flash playback woes, though again, this is expected to be sorted any moment now.

This is the problem with Flash. Every hardware and software combo needs to be certified by Adobe.

In the past, Intel often touted its Atom chip as superior to ARM because the standard platform it provides will run Windows and Linux Flash players out of the box. ARM-based devices need specially coded Flash players, because of the subtle differences in ARM chips, which are made by different vendors out of the technology templates ARM provides.

That's not a reason to abandon ARM - it has many advantages over Atom, not least its impressive power efficiency - but it shows how 'ARM plus Android' is not the standard platform you might assume it to be.

It also explains why so few other tablet makers are rushing to market with Android 3.0 Honeycomb devices.

Chip Maker Cocks Snook at Apple With IPAD Family

Chip maker cocks snook at Apple with IPAD family

You have to admire chip maker STMicroelectronics' cojones - or boggle at the company's seeming stupidity. It is promoting the word 'iPad' as both an acronym and a trademark.

You'll note that, in the sentence above, we use Apple's capitalisation, and that's the way World+Dog writes it too. Not STMicro, which capitalises the lot: 'IPAD'.

Presumably, it hopes we'll read and speak it letter by letter, as we would with, say, 'HDMI', 'USB' and 'CPU'. Apple, on the other hand, expects us to say the first letter then treat the remaining three as a word in its own right.

Incidentally, this is is how Reg Hardware treats capitalisation, borrowing the tradition established by the Oxford English Dictionary. If the abbreviation is read or spoken as a word, we only captalise the first character.

Examples include 'Ram' and 'Rom'. 'CD' is capitalised because, like the earlier examples, you say it out loud - or in your head - as discrete letters. 'CD-Rom' neatly mixes the two notion.
STMicro IPAD

There are exceptions: 'RIM', for 'Research in Motion', is a case in point. We tend to write this as 'Rim', because that's how we all say it - only a few, odd souls say are-eye-emm. But a number of readers don't like this approach, preferring 'RIM', even though it is still spoken and read as a word, because they are either used to seeing it that way in print, or because they feel it mocks their favoured smartphone platform.

But we digress. Back to STMicro, which defines IPAD, as opposed to iPad - but not 'Ipad', which looks ugly in sans serif text, and is ambiguous: is that a capital 'i' or a lower-case 'l'? - as an "Integrated Passive and Active Device".

Trademark law in most nations that have one allows multiple use of protected words, provided each case can't be mistaken for the other. No one is (hopefully) going to misunderstand a reference to a Ford Focus as a pointer to Focus magazine, for instance.

The devices STMicro is referring to are chips, but that may prove too close a relationship for Apple's aggressively protective trademark lawyers, especially when STMicro accompanies its discussion of the IPAD with a picture of a gadget, as you can see above, that looks a lot like an iPhone with some PhotoShopped additions.

The chips "reduce parts count and simplify the design of reliable, high-speed data circuits commonly used in smartphones, tablets and mobile computers", STMicro claims.

Apple, of course, had to deal with the fact that another company, Fujitsu, held the name 'iPad' among its roster of trademarks for a gadget released in 2002. Apple eventually acquired the trademark from Fujitsu, for an undisclosed sum.

Will it strike a similar deal with STMicro? Or is a 'cease and desist' letter in the post even as we speak?

Incidentally, the US Patents and Trademarks Office lists STMicro as the owner of two IPAD trademarks, but marked as "abandoned". It has also trademarked - as of 2001 - 'IPAD' in Europe

Whether the new connector tech will be part of the upcoming MacBook Pro update (rumored to happen February 24) or announced in another context is not clear. Intel has been working on a technology called Light Peak for years and recently said the initial version would be based on copper, as practical realities dictate more conventional technology.

Apple is expected to adopt this technology in the near future--but likely use a name other than Light Peak, a source familiar with this aspect of Apple's plans said. Intel has said in the past that the first products using Light Peak should appear in the first half of 2011.

When Intel initially demonstrated Light Peak at its developer conference in 2009 it used a machine running Apple's Mac OS X.

Light Peak was originally touted by Intel as the holy grail of connector technology: a single replacement for the myriad cables that connect to monitors, external drives, scanners, printers, and anything else that plugs into a computer. But Intel--and Apple--may be targeting more specific connection protocols, at least initially.

As originally proposed, the fiber-optic technology connects many devices to PCs with fiber-optic lines. But, as mentioned, the initial version of Light Peak will use copper instead of light-based technologies, Intel has said.

Light Peak is significantly faster than even USB 3.0, carrying data at 10 gigabits per second in both directions simultaneously. Connection speeds will not be affected by the transition to copper, according to Intel.

Sony is also expected to be an early adopter of the technology.

More on Light Peak can be found here, from an interview with Jason Ziller, an Intel manager heading up the chipmaker's work on the technology

An update to Google Social Search

An update to Google Social Search

Today we’re doing a little bit more to bring you all the goodness of Google, plus the opinions of the people you care about.

As always, we want to help you find the most relevant answers among the billions of interconnected pages on the web.

Today we’re doing a little bit more to bring you all the goodness of Google, plus the opinions of the people you care about. As always, we want to help you find the most relevant answers among the billions of interconnected pages on the web. But relevance isn’t just about pages—it’s also about relationships. That’s why we introduced Google Social Search in 2009, and why we’ve made a number of improvements since then. Today we’re taking another step forward—enabling you to get even more information from the people that matter to you, whether they’re publishing on YouTube, Flickr or their own blog or website.

First, social search results will now be mixed throughout your results based on their relevance (in the past they only appeared at the bottom). This means you’ll start seeing more from people like co-workers and friends, with annotations below the results they’ve shared or created. So if you’re thinking about climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro and your colleague Matt has written a blog post about his own experience, then we’ll bump up that post with a note and a picture:

Social search results can rank anywhere on the page, and you’ll see who shared the result in the annotation underneath

Second, we’ve made Social Search more comprehensive by adding notes for links people have shared on Twitter and other sites. In the past, we’d show you results people created and linked through their Google profiles. Now, if someone you’re connected to has publicly shared a link, we may show that link in your results with a clear annotation (which is visible only to you, and only when you’re signed in). For example, if you’re looking for a video of President Obama on “The Daily Show” and your friend Nundu tweeted the video, that result might show up higher in your results and you’ll see a note with a picture of Nundu:

Now Social Search includes links people share on Twitter and other services

Third, we’ve given you more control over how you connect accounts, and made connecting accounts more convenient. You can still connect accounts publicly on your Google profile, but now we’ve added a new option to connect accounts privately in your Google Account. (After all, you may not want everyone to know you’re @spongebobsuperfan on Twitter.) In addition, if our algorithms find a public account that might be yours (for example, because the usernames are the same), we may invite you to connect your accounts right on the search results page and in your Google Account settings:

The new setting enables you to choose whether or not to show your connected accounts publicly on your Google profile

For an overview of Google Social Search and our new features, check out the explanatory video:

As always, you’ll only get social search results when you choose to log in to your Google Account. We’re starting to roll out the updates today on Google.com in English only and you’ll see them appear in the coming week. With these changes, we want to help you find the most relevant information possible, personalized to your interests and the people you care about. To learn more, check out our help center.

Google woos publishers with One Pass payment service

Google woos publishers with One Pass payment service

Google Inc launched a service to make it easy for publishers to sell digital versions of newspapers and magazines, undercutting a similar plan launched by Apple Inc, as both tech titans battle to dominate smartphones and tablet computers.

Google announced in a blog post on Wednesday its plan to woo newspapers and magazines, a day after Apple rolled out a subscription platform for digital media sold through its iTunes app store.

Google said its new service, dubbed One Pass, allows publishers to sell content that consumers can view on websites as well as in specialized apps designed for smartphones and tablet PCs. Publishers can charge for content in a variety of ways, including subscriptions, metered access and sales of single articles.

Google is letting publishers keep about 90 percent of subscription revenue gained through One Pass and is passing along some customer data.

"Our intention is to make no money on it," said Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt at an event in Berlin. "We want the publishers to make all the money."

Google's service also lets publishers provide existing print subscribers with free or discounted access to digital content, Google said.

Newspaper and magazine publishers are looking to reap revenue from online and digital editions in the hopes of reviving declining readership and advertising revenue.

"All of the sudden the entire news industry is saying we need digital subscription money and we need it now," said Ken Doctor, a media analyst with Outsell Research.

Consumers must use the company's payment system, Google Checkout, in order to use One Pass.

On Tuesday, Apple introduced a long-awaited subscription plan for magazines, newspapers, videos, music and books that provide digital content in specialized apps for iPad and iPhone users.

The service allows Apple to keep 30 percent of customer payments to any publisher with a presence in its App Store. Apple also lets consumers decide how much personal data to supply publishers when they sign up for subscriptions. Analysts have said Apple's new plan risks angering content developers.

"It's shortsighted," Forrester analyst James McQuivey wrote in a blog post. "Apple has given every publisher, producer, and distributor in the business a reason to actively pursue alternatives to the elegant apps that Apple had hitherto taught us to depend on."

One sticking point with publishers on Apple's subscription plan involves customer data. Publishers are particularly protective of subscriber data such as names, addresses and credit cards because it helps them court advertisers and market new products to existing readers.

Google said it will share a customer's name, zip code and email address with the publishers though consumers have the option not to share that information, said Google spokeswoman Jeannie Hornung.

"We do not share credit card and payment information," Hornung said.

Google's partners include the German-based media company Axel Springer AG and U.S.-based newspaper companies Media General and Rust Communications. One Pass is currently available for publishers in Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Britain and the United States.

Obama to meet Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg

steve jobs
Obama to meet Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg

President Barack Obama will meet ailing Apple chief Steve Jobs and other US high-tech gurus Thursday in California, US officials have said.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt will also participate in the closed doors meeting, part of an event with business leaders in Silicon Valley, an official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

ABC News reported that Facebook's 26-year-old founder Mark Zuckerberg would also participate in the talks, just days after Egyptian protesters toppled Hosni Mubarak's decades-old regime in a popular uprising facilitated by social networks.

On Tuesday, Schmidt said Google was "very, very proud" of cyberactivist Wael Ghonim, a young executive at the company who emerged as a leading voice of the Egyptian uprising.

Ghonim, Google's head of marketing for the Middle East and North Africa, administered a Facebook page that helped spark the uprising.

The 30-year-old also appeared in an emotional television interview shortly after he was released from police custody after 12 days that is credited with re-energizing the movement just as it seemed to be losing steam.

In an interview with CBS's "60 Minutes" that aired Sunday, Ghonim said the protests which led to Mubarak's ouster would not have happened without online social networks.

"If there was no social networks it would have never been sparked," he said.

Artificial Crater on Comet Spotted in New Flyby Photos

Artificial Crater on Comet Spotted in New Flyby Photos

artificial crater on the comet Tempel 1 created nearly six years ago by a NASA spacecraft takes center stage in a flood of new photos released late Tuesday (Feb. 15) after another probe revisited the comet.

The intentional scar on comet Tempel 1 was created in 2005 by NASA's Deep Impact mission, which dropped a small probe on the comet to see what it was made of. The space agency's Stardust spacecraft flew by Tempel 1 late Monday (Feb. 14), snapping close up photos that provide a new look at the battered comet, including the Deep Impact crater.

"We see a crater with a small mound in the center, and it appears that some of the ejecta went up and came right back down," said Pete Schultz of Brown University, Providence, R.I., in a statement. "This tells us this cometary nucleus is fragile and weak based on how subdued the crater is we see today.

It also means that Tempel 1's man-made crater partially healed itself as the ejecta settled and refilled part of the depression.

The 72 high-resolution photos of comet Tempel 1 snapped by Stardust clearly show the crater created during the Deep Impact collision. The crater is 492 feet (150 meters) across and is tucked between two larger craters that predate the Deep Impact mission.

On the left, the image from Deep Impact shows a dark mound about 50 meters (160 feet) in size. The image on the right, newly obtained by NASA's Stardust spacecraft Feb. 14, 2011, shows the impactor erased that dark mound and flattened the area.

Comet Tempel 1 revisted

Comet Tempel 1 is 3.7 miles (6 km) wide and completes one trip around the sun ever 5 1/2 years. In July 2005, Deep Impact mission smacked it with an 800-pound

(363-kilogram) copper probe while its mothership watched from a safe distance. The Stardust probe's main mission was to observe how Tempel 1 has changed since that crash.

The Stardust spacecraft flew within 110 miles (178 kilometers) of comet Tempel 1 when it zipped by the icy wanderer Monday night at about 11:40 p.m. EST (0440 Feb. 15 GMT).

And the Stardust probe did not disappoint. Not only did it snap photos of the Deep Impact crater, but also collected information on the atmosphere around Tempel 1.

Stardust recorded data on the amount of dust cloud, called the coma, around comet Tempel 1. It beamed back 468 kilobytes of data and apparently took a beating as it zoomed past Tempel 1 at 24,300 mph (39,107 kph).

The spacecraft passed through waves of comet particles as it flew through the cloud around Tempel 1. At least 12 hits penetrated through more than one layer of the Stardust spacecraft's protective shielding, NASA officials said.

"The data indicate Stardust went through something similar to a B-17 bomber flying through flak in World War II," said Stardust-NExT co-investigator Don Brownlee of the University of Washington in Seattle. "Instead of having a little stream of uniform particles coming out, they apparently came out in chunks and crumbled.

Comet probe's last hurrah

Stardust's comet Tempel 1 flyby went flawlessly save for one hitch. When the spacecraft turned its antenna back to Earth to beam its photos to eager scientists and space fans, it sent them in chronological order instead of relaying to closest, most eye-catching views first.

Because Stardust takes a while to send each photo across the 209 million miles between comet Tempel 1 and Earth (it takes light about 19 minutes to make a one-way trip) it meant a long wait to see the comet flyby highlights.

The first new photos of comet Tempel 1 relayed by Stardust were from more than 1,000 miles away, NASA said.

But despite the delay, NASA scientists said they are excited to begin diving into the wealth of data returned by the Stardust probe. It was the second comet flyby for Stardust, which visited the comet Wild 2 in 2004. NASA called its extra trip to Tempel 1 "Stardust-NExT, for "New Exploration of Tempel."

"This mission is 100 percent successful," said Joe Veverka, Stardust-NExT principal investigator of Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y. "We saw a lot of new things that we didn't expect, and we'll be working hard to figure out what Tempel 1 is trying to tell us.

Nokia Now Nokia's N9-00, its first planned MeeGo device, was canned -- apparently due to

Yesterday's announcement by Nokia that it's switching to Windows Phone 7 as its primary smartphone platform has already had, and will continue to have, great repercussions for plenty of parties besides the Finnish company and its new best bud Microsoft.

One of the biggest effects of that deal was that Nokia now no longer considers MeeGo -- the open-source OS it was co-developing with Intel -- an item of priority, classifying it as a "learning project." No prizes for guessing Intel's nowhere near happy about that, but would you have also guessed Nokia kept Chipzilla in the dark about its new direction until the day it announced it to the world? Such is the word from TechCrunch's well placed sources, who also say that Nokia dedicated only a three-man external team to the development of UI customizations for MeeGo.

Not exactly the hugest investment in the world, we'd say, and when you consider Nokia and Microsoft already have concept devices drawn up, you've got to think plans to abandon MeeGo as a sincere flagship strategy were materializing in Espoo a long time before this event. It would probably have been nice to tell Intel, though, just to be classy.

Pembangkit Listrik Tenaga Lalat Pengganti Tenaga Batteray

Berikut video: Jam Dinding Pemakan Serangga.

Google.com/phone – What’s Next?

Google.com/phone – What’s Next?

I don’t think it’s any secret that Google typically makes terrific business decisions, as you don’t become a Top 200 Global Company without doing so.  I have to admit though, there’s one aspect of Google that has left me scratching my head just a little bit.  Just over one year ago, in January 2010, Google released its new cell phone the Nexus One (good decision), and simultaneously announced it would only be available to purchase through Google.com/phone (head scratching decision).  It appeared Google wanted to enter the world of mobile device eCommerce.

Though the phone is excellent  (my fiancĂ© purchased the Nexus One when it came out), through 2010 there have been numerous reports of disappointing sales, most likely due to the unavailability of the phone through typical channels.  No doubt Google had weighed the risks vs rewards when deciding to try its hand at ecommerce, and it may have come to find out that the world just isn’t quite ready for Google being a retailer.  As a result,  it came as no great surprise when Google announced it would be discontinuing the Nexus One in July, along with the Google.com/phone online store.

But while purchasing a Nexus One via Google.com/phone is no longer a possibility, the website Google.com/phone lived on. On September 30th, Google announced via its official mobile blog that it was launching the “Google Phone Gallery” on the Google.com/phone property.  The Google Phone Gallery is essentially a database of Android OS phones directing interested traffic to the appropriate carrier website.

Screen Shot of Google.com/phone – 01/27/11
screenshot google.com/phone january 2011

    * On November 1st, 2010 there were 26 devices from 6 different service providers (AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless, Cellularsouth, US Cellular).  On January 27th, there were 37 devices also available from 6 service providers, indicating Google is continuining to grow this database with each new launch
    * The 37 devices includes 2 discontinued devices which are still available to “compare”.  The Nexus One and the DROID Eris by HTC.  It also includes the Samsung Galaxy Tablet, available from all four major US Wireless providers.
    * The Gallery is not exhaustive of all Android devices. For example, it doesn’t include the popular Motorola Cliq or the Zio from recent Android entrant Sanyo/Kyocera. But most intriguing is that the gallery doesn’t include Android devices preloaded with Bing or Yahoo as the default search engine, such as the Samsung Fascinate (with Bing as the default) and the Motorola Backflip (with Yahoo as the default).  These missing devices have lead to much discussion that Google.com/phone is only a Google Phone Gallery, as opposed to a broader Android Phone Gallery

Moving from an ecommerce store to an Android Storefront was an interesting shift in strategy, that does not appear to have driven sustained interest in Google.com/phone.  Even with the addition of new devices over the past few months, traffic has not consistently rose to the levels we saw in January of 2010.  Below, we look at weekly traffic to Google.com/phone:

volume of weekly traffic google.com/phone june 2010 to october 2010

    * Traffic to the online “store” dropped nearly 75% W-O-W from the week of the 18th to the week of the 25th, when Google stopped selling the Nexus One
    * With the exception of initial push after the announcement of the Gallery the week of 9/26/2010, traffic has remained low since the week of the 18th

It’s not surprising traffic has been so low, as Google has not appeared to have done anything to drive traffic to the phone page.  Keeping with its traditions, there are no links to the page on the Google.com homepage, and you can’t find a link to it within the Google navigation.  In fact, even a search for “Android Phones” on Google.com turns up nothing
