Picking Quality Dinnerware

Perfect table setting is all the more appealing when quality dinnerware is used that further accentuates the interior décor. Quality dinnerware is a sophistication statement and a focal point at the dinner table as much as the meal to be served on them. Some dinnerware is a family heirloom that is passed down from one generation to the next. This tradition can also be started and the key is to pick elaborate dinnerware that can also be custom made to a particular design and style. Some even incorporate engraved initials on the silverware and on the edges of the plates. Different considerations will determine the choice of dinnerware key among them being whether they are for everyday use or for fine dining.

Unbreakable Everyday Dinnerware

When choosing everyday use dinnerware it is important to consider the prevailing décor in the kitchen and the dining room. This will ensure a harmonious blend in the table setting and the room’s décor. It is also advisable to have an extra set because everyday dinnerware undergoes a lot of wear and tear and may get scratches or even crack and break. Even unbreakable varieties will need to be replaced after some time as they begin to show their age. The extra set will also come in handy when unexpected guests arrive at dinner time so that the dinnerware is matching.

For fine dining dinnerware, select white or cream for a more flexible dinner table setting. These colours are also easy to replace incase of breakages. Add colour to the table by using coloured chargers and table linen and napkins. Fine dinnerware and china is usually sold individually rather than in sets and may be costlier than regular everyday dinnerware. Include matching serving bowl and condiment sets for a more elaborate setting. Always hand wash fine dinnerware.

Christmas Dinner Table Setting

Most Christmas dinners are very formal affairs that require an appropriate table setting. This calls for elaborate, place settings, dining utensils and centrepieces to complement the elaborate meal prepared. The most important factor to remember is that the décor should tie in with the season and so using Christmas colours and themes is a must. Place mats in Christmas colours will add colour to the table especially if the plates are white. A neutral plate charger such as gold or silver is ideal for such a setting. The table napkins can then be in the same colour as the place mat and tied with a gold or silver ring to complete the décor.

Using Christmas Colours and Ornaments

The holidays are considered to be fruitful and full of life so adding some greenery to the centrepiece is quite fitting. A potted poinsettia is quite traditional as a centrepiece adding vibrancy with its colour. For variety, a basket full of different coloured apples will do exceptionally well as far as centrepieces go. The handle can then be tied in a beautiful bow in a complementing colour. The table can be left bare or draped in a checked cloth that complements the other colours. A white table cloth is ideal for a very formal dinner while other Christmas colours are equally elegant.

Candle sticks and candelabra are great for holiday table settings and they accomplish different functions. For a romantic and intimate Christmas dinner, they provide illumination and ambience from the coloured and scented candles while at the same time are striking centrepieces especially the gold and silver variety. For a family dinner, the candles provide additional illumination and the candelabra can be incorporated as centrepieces. For a more laid back table setting, Christmas ball in different colours placed in a bowl are great  as a centrepiece.

Formal Table Setting

Appropriate table setting will in a great way enhance the interior decorating in a dining room and so it is important to know where to place what to avoid disaster during dinner. A formal table setting is in many ways different from an informal table setting key among the differences being the cutlery used. A formal dinner should comprise of not less than five courses and the guests remain seated during the meal as they are served. When space permits, most formal table settings have the entire cutlery placed at the sides of the plate, including the dessert spoon and fork, with the napkin neatly folded on the left.

Rules for Formal Table Setting

A general rule of thumb is to place the cutlery to be used first, furthest from the plate, with the knives and spoons on the right and the forks on the left. Knife blades should face the plate and the fork prongs upwards. Serving cutlery should be on the table close to where the serving dishes are placed and condiment sets should be placed well on the table. Generally a formal setting demands different wines with different courses of the meal, so different glasses are set on the right hand side. White wine glasses are smaller in size than red wine glasses and dessert wine glasses are the smallest. These are set directly above the corresponding knife on the right.

Choice of china can greatly enhance a formal setting with white unpatterned ones being the most elegant. These have the advantage of displaying the food and not distracting from it, boosting the visual appreciation of the meal. The side plate goes to the left and matching place mats or chargers can be placed in between the knives and forks to complement the stylish décor. Tasteful table setting markedly harmonizes interior decorating.
