The King Stone looking towards the Nine Ladies stone circle
There are nine upright stones, each of local millstone grit, each less than a metre high sat in clearing in a modern wood planted on Stanton Moor.[3] They sit in a rough circle with a gap at the south side of the circle where no stone-hole has been found. However, an additional stone, lying flat rather than upright, was discovered after being exposed as a cropmark in the dry weather of 1976. It is now visible.[4] The circle is built on an embankment which levelled the local terrain.[5] The small "King Stone" lies forty metres from the circle to the west-south-west and is clearly visible from it.[1]
The Nine Ladies were among the 28 archetypal monuments in England and Wales included in General Pitt-Rivers' Schedule to the first Ancient Monuments Protection Act, which became law in 1882. It was taken into state care the following year.[6]
The site has been the focus of a long-running environmental protest.
In 1999 Stancliffe Stone Ltd submitted a planning application re-open two dormant quarries (Endcliffe and Lees Cross) on the wooded hillside beside Stanton Moor. The proposed quarry was only 200 m from Nine Ladies, on land owned by Haddon Hall estate and leased to Stancliffe Stone.
A local protest group SLAG (Stanton Lees Action Group) was set up to oppose the quarry. The group was joined by environmental protestors who set up a long-running and controversial protest camp. They built many tree houses, from which the inhabitants are hard to evict. The protesters defied a court eviction order in February 2004, and continued to occupy the site until the winter of 2008-09.
In 2004 the High Court classified the two quarries as dormant. This decision was appealed but the classification was upheld in June 2005.[7] This meant that the quarries could not re-open until the Peak District National Park Authority agreed on a set of working conditions for them. In 2008 permission to quarry near the circle was finally revoked[8]

Every Saturday from 9.00 to 16.00 Without a doubt, this weekly organic farmers market is one of the gastronomic delights of Amsterdam. Some even go as far as to say it is one of the best in Europe! In existence now for almost 20 years, it has become an Amsterdam institution...This wonderfully atmospheric food market is located on the Noordermarkt, a delightful square nestled between the Westerstraat and the Prinsengracht, in the heart of the charming Jordaan quarter. For food lovers in Amsterdam, it is simply an experience not to be missed. Specialist stalls carry an array of organic produce: bread, herbs, oils and of course, all the fruit, vegetables and flowers of the season, and much more besides. Try some fresh fruit juice or let yourself be amazed at the stunning display at the mushroom stall, and pick up a free recipe leaflet while you are there. In all, over 30 stall holders, arrive before dawn every Saturday to set up shop and trade until late afternoon, come rain, shine or snow. And yes, EVERYTHING is organic. But perhaps it is the people that give this market its unique atmosphere. The stall operators, always full of enthusiasm and in good spirits, constantly banter back and forth with the shoppers. The shoppers themselves are quite an eclectic mix - gourmands, chefs, Amsterdammers, tourists and expats, but they all contribute to the great atmosphere of this organic Farmers Market.

Defined A earthship house is made up of rammed earth and tires. The tires are stacked (staggered) like bricks. Each tire has earth pounded into them until firmly packed. Once the tires are packed, they are very difficult to move and form quite a dense wall. The walls are load bearing and provide thermal mass which is an important attribute to any energy efficient house. Thermal mass stores heat and releases the heat slowly. This keeps indoor temperature constant while outside temperatures fluctuate. Once the walls are in place, the walls are quite often plastered over and appear very similar to an adobe style house.
History Michael Reynolds a Southwestern US architect is credited with building the first earthship. His wife coined the phrase because the house was self-sustaining, requiring no outside source of water nor electricity. The house just kind of sailed around, hence the name earthship. The house was built out of discarded materials such as automobile tires and aluminum cans and finished with natural adobe.
What are the advantages of building an earthship?
Energy Efficiency - Earthships provide a large amount of thermal mass. This helps keep the house cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Most homes of this type have been built in the southwestern part of the United States although I did visit a house under construction in Bancroft, Ontario. I don't recall if the owners were going to insulate the outside at all, but it may not be a bad idea for northern climates.
Self-Sustainability - The homes are designed to take advantage of natural resources. The homes are typically built in rectangular form and oriented to take advantage of passive solar radiation. Rainwater is also stored in cisterns and gray water is recycled.
"Buildability" - Earthships can be owner built. There is obviously, quite a bit of labor involved but if time is not a factor, a house of this type could be built with just a couple of workers. Basic carpentry, plumbing and electric skills are required.
Easy Availability - Not only are tires easy to get, some places will pay you to take them away! There are plenty of tires, bottles and aluminum cans around.
http://storyofelectronics.org ---- The Story of Electronics, releasing Tuesday, NOVEMBER 9, employs the Story of Stuff style to explore the high-tech revolution's collateral damage—6 billion tons of e-waste and counting, poisoned workers and a public left holding the bill. Host Annie Leonard takes viewers from the mines and factories where our gadgets begin to the horrific backyard recycling shops in China where many end up. The film concludes with a call for a green 'race to the top' where designers compete to make long-lasting, toxic-free products that are fully and easily recyclable.
Our production partner on the electronics film is the Electronics TakeBack Coalition, which promotes green design and responsible recycling in the electronics industry.
We, the undersigned civil society groups who have been present here in The Hague, collectively reject the Hague Roadmap for Action.
More than 100 organisations, many of which have not been invited to this Conference, have also expressed their serious concerns in a Civil Society Statement on October 31.
Those most impacted by climate change and whose livelihoods are most at risk, in particular small-scale farmers, indigenous people and women especially from developing countries, have not been present, or consulted, nor have genuinely participated in this process. A democratic and participatory process should have involved all sectors of civil society engaged on these issues in a process designed to genuinely engage and dialogue with civil society. The "roadmap for action" drafted by a few cannot be claimed to have been "collectively developed", even by those present at the Conference.
We therefore have strong objections to a Chair's summary that portrays a "shared understanding" on challenges and solutions for a so-called roadmap on highly complex linkages between food security, climate change and agriculture.
The conference also lacks the legitimacy of a UN process where all governments are represented, and negotiate and adopt decisions. It therefore cannot produce as its output an agreed Roadmap for Action, but should only issue a Chair's summary of the various discussions that have taken place at the conference.
In addition, a process that genuinely seeks to draw together the linkages between agriculture, food security and climate change should have involved participants from both the agriculture and climate change sectors and processes. Otherwise, the outcome of the conference could be interpreted to be an attempt to undermine or pre-empt on-going negotiations in the UNFCCC.
Our understanding of the problems and solutions differs fundamentally from the framing posed by the organizers. We believe that adaptation has to be the main priority of this conference. The agricultural challenges faced by the poorest and most vulnerable, in Africa but also in Asia, in small-island states, in Latin America, are adaptation challenges. While sustainable farming practices can provide mitigation benefits, the climate crisis is caused first and foremost by the emissions of rich countries and we reject that small farmers are meant now to take on the mitigation responsibilities of the North.
The unanimous endorsement of carbon markets and market mechanisms in the draft is unfounded. There are on-going discussions about market-based mechanisms at both the CBD and the UNFCCC. At the 10th Conference of the Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity which ended in Nagoya last week, the issue of innovative financial mechanisms, including market mechanisms for financing biodiversity, proved so controversial that a draft decision on it was not adopted.
Also, at the UNFCCC, the issue of carbon market mechanisms is equally controversial. Developing countries support limiting the use of existing carbon market mechanisms, and oppose the introduction of new ones. Therefore, the conference should refrain from policy prescriptions about carbon markets.
This is because under the UNFCCC, developed countries have legally binding commitments to finance adaptation and mitigation (including for agriculture) in developing countries. So-called innovative "carbon finance" is being promoted by some so that developed countries can avoid, rather than fulfill their obligations. Instead, many developing countries are demanding that fund-based financing should be the focus. Carbon markets, with their speculative tendencies, inherent instability, combined with the complexity of the agriculture markets could spell disaster for food rights, food security and livelihoods in developing countries.
Finally, tools and strategies needed to address food security, food sovereignty and climate change have been widely discussed in the IAASTD; in ongoing discussions within the UN FAO Committee on World Food Security and key processes led by social movements such as La Via Campesina and other farmers organizations. The Hague conference need not reinvent the wheel. Conference organizers cannot therefore ascribe a set of tools and policy recommendations to all the participants who have gathered here.

Call out Public Inspection of a Monsanto Facility Enkhuizen, Tuesday morning 2 November 2010
Food security in times of climate change? 1-5 Nov agro industry lobbies, powerful governments, the UN, and Worldbank are getting together in the conference It’s down 2 Earth in The Hague preparing for the climate summit COP16 this November in Cancun, Mexico. They come up with technological solutions when what we need is a system change.
1. Get you hands off our lands and food! Multinationals are monopolizing our food supply. They are chemical companies selling pesticides and artificial fertilizers. These multinationals develop patented GM crops, buy up seed companies, and tell greenwash stories to sell more chemicals and make more money. Large agribusiness, such as Monsanto and Syngenta, have other agendas and priorities than food security or fighting climate change. Their practices threaten small-scale farming and peoples’ food sovereignty around the world.
2. Our climate is not for sale! One of the main drivers of deforestation and CO2 pollution is industrial agribusiness, mainly with soy crops and palm oil monocultures. Monsanto is lobbying hard for carbon credits for their GM Roundup Ready soybeans because these would contribute to the reduction of CO2. But in reality the soy is transported all over the globe and nearby communities get poisoned with Roundup pesticide, loose their own food production, end up in the slums.
3. Food sovereignty – no food monopolies! The only way to enable people around the world to feed themselves is to establish food sovereignty: local community control over lands, seeds, water and sustainable agricultural processes. This can only be achieved by getting rid of monopolising, profit-seeking corporations and speculators like Monsanto and Syngenta. Small-scale agriculture not only contributes positively to the carbon balance of the planet, it also gives employment to 2.8 billion people. It remains the best way to combat hunger, malnutrition and the current food crisis. It uses less fossil fuels, takes local ecosystems into account and does not poison the environment with pesticides.
To get real ‘climate smart agriculture’ we need to start with getting the truth out and reveal the corporate lies about the current agriculture system. Let’s bring out Monsanto’s Hidden Agenda with a Public Inspection!

* Civil Society statement of concern on the Hague Conference on Agriculture, Food Security and Climate Change This letter by civil society outlines concerns about a high level meeting "Down 2 Earth" at the Hague on agriculture, food security and climate change. http://www.iatp.org/climate/files/document/civil%20society%20statement_hague_0.pdf
* New scientific report: GM soy Sustainable, Responsible? (September 2010) The cultivation of Genetically Manipulated Roundup Ready RR soy endangers human and animal health, increases herbicide use, damages the environment, and has negative impacts on rural populations. The monopolistic control by agribusiness companies over GM RR soy technology and production endangers markets, compromises the economic viability of farming, and threatens food security. In light of these impacts, it is misleading to describe GM RR soy production as sustainable and responsible. To do so sends a confusing message to consumers and all in the supply chain, interfering with their ability to identify products that reflect their needs and values. Proponents of GM RR soy are invited to address the arguments and scientific findings in this paper and to join in a transparent, science based inquiry into the principles of sustainability and soy production. http://www.gmwatch.org/file/GMsoy_SustainableResponsible_Sept2010_Summary.pdf
* UN: Agriculture at a Crossroads (UN 2008) Synthesis for Scientific Report report The International Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge, Science and Technology for Development (IAASTD) This Synthesis Report captures the complexity and diversity of agriculture and agricultural knowledge, science and technology across world regions. The diversion of agricultural crops to fuel can raise food prices and reduce our ability to alleviate hunger throughout the world. The negative social effects risk being exacerbated in cases where small-scale farmers are marginalized or displaced from their land. From an environmental perspective, there is considerable variation, uncertainty and debate over the net energy balance and level of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In the long term, effects on food prices may be reduced, but environmental effects caused by land and water requirements of large-scale increases of first generation biofuels production are likely to persist and will need to be addressed. "Although considered by many to be a success story, the benefits of productivity increases in world agriculture are unevenly spread. Often the poorest of the poor have gained little or nothing; and 850 million people are still hungry or malnourished with an additional 4 million more joining their ranks annually. We are putting food that appears cheap on our tables; but it is food that is not always healthy and that costs us dearly in terms of water, soil and the biological diversity on which all our futures depend." — Professor Bob Watson, director, IAASTD http://www.agassessment.org/reports/IAASTD/EN/Agriculture%20at%20a%20Crossroads_Synthesis%20Report%20%28English%29.pdf

* Agriculture and climate change: Real problems, false solutions Preliminary report by Grupo de Reflexion Rural, Biofuelwatch, EcoNexus and NOAH – Friends of the Earth Denmark – Bonn, June 2009 "The development of the bio-economy implies that huge areas of the planet will be turned over to massive monocultures of biomass raw material for processing in biorefineries. This prioritises the use of biomass for economic purposes over ecological purposes such as protecting biodiversity or ecosystems. Furthermore demand is potentially limitless as massive increases in energy consumption are predicted. This is compounded by the fact that plant biomass has low energy density in comparison with the fossil fuels it is meant to replace. The development of the bio-economy would further extend all the well-documented impacts of industrial agriculture on soils, water, biodiversity, ecosystem integrity, small-scale farmers, local communities and indigenous peoples. It could signal the end of major tracts of forest and other vital ecosystems. The irony is that this would all take place in the name of tackling climate change." "Land that is classified as marginal often has great value to people, biodiversity and ecosystems and for climate stabilisation. Turning it over to industrial cropping for food or fuel may increase regional and global climate change." http://www.econexus.info/pdf/agriculture-climate-change-june-2009.pdf
Visualizing Consolidation in the Global Seed Industry: 1996–2008 The commercial seed industry has undergone tremendous consolidation in the last 40 years as transnational corporations entered this agricultural sector, and acquired or merged with competing firms. This trend is associated with impacts that constrain the opportunities for renewable agriculture, such as reductions in seed lines and a declining prevalence of seed saving. To better characterize the current structure of the industry, ownership changes from 1996 to 2008 are represented visually with information graphics. Since the commercialization of transgenic crops in the mid-1990s, the sale of seeds has become dominated globally by Monsanto, DuPont and Syngenta. In addition, the largest firms are increasingly networked through agreements to cross-license transgenic seed traits. In our workshop together with your children we are making a short movie. We do as much as possible to change for better the way how people live in this world.Together we will discuss serious issues that not only affect us but affect animals and affect our beautiful Planet called Mother Earth.
Main aim and purpose of giving this workshop is for children to have an understanding of issues such as-
Video Activism Climate change Environmental friendly choice Educating others.
The workshop could be done in different location, occasions, circumstances, language or time. We provide equipment and care. Here is a list of the topics that we may cover:
What is Video Activism? Why is Video Activism important during these times? How do I use a video camera? Watch video or film clips Role-playing Read-arounds Creating Scenarios Creating projects Question and Answer sessions
At the end of the workshop children should have basic knowledge about video activism, using the camcorder, climate change etc. The children will work together in small groups to solve or demonstrate a problem. And together we will make a film which will help to change the world for better ( Hopefully)
This workshop was(is) about climate change but we can do about any other important topic like human and animal rights, freedom, tolerance, organic, vege, fair trade food, peace, refugees issue, use of alcohol etc.etc. For some of the things what we manage to do publish You can check this play list: http://www.youtube.com/user/spiritofsquatters#grid/user/60ED33E94409169E but keep in mind that with each time we becoming better and better
Yes ! We know all that bad things about the authority, we agree about that governments are corrupt and politicians are lying. We are anarchists like many of You but we see that things are not always black and white and life it's often art off compromise. We are glad that Tamira from ecologic and social related party GroenLinks it's supporting us and for that we will also support her. To be more efficient in our struggle for affordable houses we have to be more open for society what means accepting sometimes other ways of thinking and other ways towards common goal. We have be more focus on that's what is uniting us not on that what is dividing us. As a squatters movement, being on the first line of the anti capitalistic struggle we should give example of unity towards victory. This example, us, society needs more than ever. We living in the times of economic and ecologic crisis where here in Netherlands many people seems to be blinded by right wing capitalists propaganda.First refugees and migrants without papers, now squatters which minority going to be next ? (You alone ? Or We together ?) We should show to all society that we are with them and we are fighting not just for roof above our heads but also for better life for all of us. In any possible way. That's why we should also massively join the demo "Rekening Retour" in 23 October. ...
To continue about campaign: I heard that's in the past after any riots etc. we spread thousands of neighborhood letters. Shall we not do the same ? Shall we not spread them to all our neighbors who very often don't know what is going on and that's why some of them are keeping asking ( i had so many discussions and most off them in this sort way of thinking "What's going to happen if You can not squat anymore?")

Tamira Combrink (1982)
Mijn moeder is (zoals zoveel Amsterdammers) migrant.
