Kevin Thompson Performs the Original "Days of Old Long Ago"

In 1788, the year in which most of the original states ratified the new U.S. Constitution, beloved Scottish poet Robbie Burns preserved some old lyrics about two friends encountering each other after a separation of many years. Here are Burns' lyrics--all of them--performed by preservationist Kevin Thompson, using the tune Burns originally intended. The English translation and original Scots lyrics are provided below.

Enjoy. And don't neglect to take a cup o' kindness, my jo.

With hearty wishes for a healthy, happy, and prosperous New Year.

English translation

Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind ?
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and days of old lang syne [long ago]?
CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my dear, for auld lang syne, we'll take a cup of kindness yet, for auld lang syne.
And surely you’ll buy your pint cup !
and surely I’ll buy mine !
And we'll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
CHORUS
We two have run about the slopes,
and picked the daisies fine ;
But we’ve wandered many a weary foot,
since auld lang syne.
CHORUS
We two have paddled in the stream,
from morning sun till dine [dinner];
But seas between us broad have roared
since auld lang syne.
CHORUS
And there’s a hand my trusty friend !
And give us a hand o’ thine !
And we’ll take a right good-will draught,
for auld lang syne.
CHORUS
Burns’ original Scots verse

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind ?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and days o'auld lang syne ?
CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my jo, for auld lang syne, we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet, for auld lang syne.
And surely ye’ll be your pint-stowp !
and surely I’ll be mine !
And we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
CHORUS
We twa hae run about the braes,
and pu’d the gowans fine ;
But we’ve wander’d mony a weary foot,
sin auld lang syne.
CHORUS
We twa hae paidl’d i' the burn,
frae morning sun till dine ;
But seas between us braid hae roar’d
sin auld lang syne.
CHORUS
And there’s a hand, my trusty fiere !
and gie's a hand o’ thine !
And we’ll tak a right gude-willy waught,
for auld lang syne.

Happy Hogmanay!

The Christmas Bomber: Curiouser and Curiouser

Every hour or two a new bit of news surfaces concerning the Christmas bomber and his attack on Flight 253.

From the Birds of a Feather Department:
[The Christmas bomber] is the fourth president of a London student Islamic society to face terrorist charges in three years. One is facing a retrial on charges that he was involved in the 2006 liquid bomb plot to blow up airliners. Two others have been convicted of terrorist offences since 2007. (Hat tip: Jihad Watch)
No chance these student leaders knew each other, I suppose.

Despite his leadership of a London Islamic society, the Christmas bomber's London mosque doesn't seem to remember him, nor does an Islamic school he attended in Houston. He was just another face in the crowd, we are supposed to believe. You know how that goes: nobody at an Islamic institution would ever notice a very devout young son of a super-wealthy international banker who happens also to be a government minister of an Islamic nation. Nah. (Hat tip: Jihad Watch)

As this information was coming out, the American Airlines pilots' union were busy complaining to the TSA (Transporation Security Administration), in writing, that, on Christmas day, all airborne pilots were not warned that a bomber had just attempted to blow up an aircraft. Only pilots of inbound transatlantic flights received a warning. Great. So much for a system that "worked just fine" after the fact. (Hat tip: Hot Air)

Dick Cheney summed up Obama's leadership plan for avoiding American deaths via man-caused-disasters :
As I’ve watched the events of the last few days it is clear once again that President Obama is trying to pretend we are not at war. He seems to think if he has a low-key response to an attempt to blow up an airliner and kill hundreds of people, we won’t be at war. He seems to think if he gives terrorists the rights of Americans, lets them lawyer up and reads them their Miranda rights, we won’t be at war. He seems to think if we bring the mastermind of Sept. 11 to New York, give him a lawyer and trial in civilian court, we won’t be at war.

He seems to think if he closes Guantanamo and releases the hard-core Al Qaeda-trained terrorists still there, we won’t be at war. He seems to think if he gets rid of the words, ‘war on terror,’ we won’t be at war. But we are at war and when President Obama pretends we aren’t, it makes us less safe. [full text here]
Over at Feed Your ADHD (which you must visit to enjoy the wonderful graphic), Jamie observed:
Most normal people are the most mad immediately after an incident… Not The One… He seems to get madder with each poll showing that the American people aren’t happy with his carefree attitude toward the MCD (Man-Caused Disasterer [formerly referred to as a terrorist]).
JammieWearingFool astutely wondered whether Attorney General Eric Holder's law firm was involved in returning one of the Christmas bomber's handlers back to Al Qaeda. Could that be why Holder is the invisible man at the moment? And what about Hillary dear? Where was the Department of State when the crotchbomber's father paid a personal visit to the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria to alert the U.S. that his son had become a jihadist?

The Justice Department did manage to collect a post-bombing-attempt statement from one flight attendant who asked the Christmas bomber what he had in his pocket and was told, "Explosive device." You can't make this stuff up. If my 80-pound grandmother whispered that in an airport, she'd have been thrown to the ground by plainclothes guys inside of 3 seconds.

Now that the Christmas bomber is lawyered up (and what a terrorist-loving lawyer he's got too, paid for by y-o-u), he won't be mentioning the names or addresses of the 25 or so other crotchbombers we're supposed to be on the lookout for. Why is that again? At Legal Insurrection, William Jacobson offered a little refresher course on the state of U.S. law concerning the GITMO detainees in 2007, when two of the Christmas bomber's handlers were released from that prison. It is time for nervous holiday air travelers of the liberal persuasion to review the effects of their vehement hatred of George W. Bush a few years back for holding terrorists at Guantanamo.

Speaking of GITMO:
The Obama administration is pushing back against calls to halt or delay closing the Guantanamo Bay prison in light of the failed Christmas Day terror attack, suggesting that shutting down the prison will undermine terrorist recruitment in the very network that claimed responsibility for last week's plot.
I think the American people will have a thing or two to say about that.

Charlie Chaplin pointed out that a day without laughter is a day wasted, and if you can't have a few chuckles about a guy who lets somebody sew an explosive into the family-jewels receptacle of his BVDs, then life has become just too serious. In that spirit, I advise you to take a laugh break over at Jeannie-ology, where some well chosen words concerning the "Banana Hammock Bomber" await.

Big Dan's Big News Dec 30, 2009

Fifteen 9/11'S a year, more than one 9/11 per month: Putting things in perspective, because the corporate owned mainstream media won't do it. What do they want you to be afraid of: ZERO people dying on a plane or 45,000 Americans dying per year due to lack of health insurance?

Some stats to put things in perspective, pointed out by Brad Blog:

In 2009, 45,000 Americans died due to lack of health insurance according to a recent Harvard study.

Getting hit by lightning vs. getting killed on a plane due to terrorism: The odds of being on given departure which is the subject of a terrorist incident have been 1 in 10,408,947 over the past decade. By contrast, the odds of being struck by lightning in a given year are about 1 in 500,000. This means that you could board 20 flights per year and still be less likely to be the subject of an attempted terrorist attack than to be struck by lightning.

Number of U.S. and coalition deaths in Iraq 2003 to present --- 4689

Number of U.S. and coalition deaths in Afghanistan 2001 to present --- 1555

Combined 8 year total --- 6,244

Number of Americans who die each year simply because they can't afford health insurance --- 45,000. Extrapolated over 8 years --- 360,000

Number of Iraqi deaths through Jan. 2008 --- One million.

3,000+ days into the war and trillions of dollars later: 8 Americans die in suicide blast in Afghanistan

So, we're freaking out about an idiot who didn't blow off a bomb on an airplane and killed zero people. The CIA knew about this guy way ahead of time. The corporate owned media who's interest is not OUR interests, reports 100x more on ZERO people killed on a plane vs. 45,000 Americans dying every year due to not having health insurance. That's FIFTEEN 9/11's a year! 45,000 Americans dying each year is like having MORE THAN ONE 9/11 A MONTH! There's elements within our government, or around our government (CIA), that are trumping up terrorism and even in on it or letting it happen, to take away more of our liberties. And the corporate owned media is also in on it. The same people are running that, too. Wake up! And they're calling it the "liberal media" to throw you off.

Ray McGovern | Are Presidents Afraid of the CIA?

plunger: What the kid's father had no way of knowing, was that it was the CIA itself who had recruited his son and prepared him for the failed bombing attempt. The father goes to the Embassy and meets with a spook who already knows that the CIA has targeted his son as a tool. They dutifully take down all the information, as if learning of it for the first time, and insist that the father not speak to anyone else about this. The CIA laughs, and proceeds with its alleged Al Qaeda operation. Does it get any more obvious?

You’ve heard by now the Haskell story right? In case you haven’t let’s start there. Kurt Haskell is an attorney. He and his wife were in Amsterdam that day after a safari and Kurt witnessed the underwear bomber (Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab) before the flight being aided by what Haskell described to be an older Indian gentleman who was well dressed.

Was the “sharp dressed man” who assisted the young Nigerian to board the Detroit-bound aircraft WITHOUT A PASSPORT a CIA operative? Why is the MSM not discussing what the rest of the world is discussing about one or two apparent “accomplices?”

Go to Google News and search "sharp dressed"

Sharp dressed man and flight 253: what was left out of the story?

Gee! Just like 9/11!

How does a massive, costly security apparatus fail to stop a known terrorism threat from boarding an airplane and wrecking devastation? Answer: when it's on purpose!!!

Israel and Rupert Murdoch's media empire:

Israel just FAKED the Iranian nuke document, and we were warned well in advance of this plane bomber by his father and nothing was done. Anyone think something funny is going on here? Does anyone else think the corporate owned media is pushing more wars against Arab countries (Iran and Yemen) and publicizing this failed bomber way out of whack in which ZERO people died vs. 45,000 Americans per year die due to lack of health insurance? And they are publicizing this failed bomber way out of whack to take away more liberties from us? You know: sacrifice liberties for safety? The media has you more scared of the ZERO people who died in the plane vs. FIFTEEN 9/11's per year of Americans dying with no health insurance!!! WHO is the company pimping full body scanners at airports??? Are the media, Israel, and our government just going to keep faking things until one slips by and we attack Iran and Yemen? How many times does this have to happen?

WASHINGTON, Dec 28 (IPS) - U.S. intelligence has concluded that the document published recently by the Times of London, which purportedly describes an Iranian plan to do experiments on what the newspaper described as a "neutron initiator" for an atomic weapon, is a fabrication, according to a former Central Intelligence Agency official.

Philip Giraldi, who was a CIA counterterrorism official from 1976 to 1992, told IPS that intelligence sources say that the United States had nothing to do with forging the document, and that Israel is the primary suspect. The sources do not rule out a British role in the fabrication, however.

The Times of London story published Dec. 14 did not identify the source of the document. But it quoted "an Asian intelligence source" - a term some news media have used for Israeli intelligence officials - as confirming that his government believes Iran was working on a neutron initiator as recently as 2007.

The story of the purported Iranian document prompted a new round of expressions of U.S. and European support for tougher sanctions against Iran and reminders of Israel's threats to attack Iranian nuclear programme targets if diplomacy fails.

U.S. news media reporting has left the impression that U.S. intelligence analysts have not made up their mind about the document's authenticity, although it has been widely reported that they have now had a full year to assess the issue.

Giraldi's intelligence sources did not reveal all the reasons that led analysts to conclude that the purported Iran document had been fabricated by a foreign intelligence agency. But their suspicions of fraud were prompted in part by the source of the story, according to Giraldi.

"The Rupert Murdoch chain has been used extensively to publish false intelligence from the Israelis and occasionally from the British government," Giraldi said.

Israel fabricated recent Iran "nuke document".

A Question of Enemy Identification

A few days ago, as part of the holiday bonding ritual observed in families that embrace both conservatives and liberals, I pondered again the befuddling (to me) concept that "radical" Christians are just as dangerous as "radical" Muslims.

Despite considerable effort on my part over the years, I have been unable to grasp the reasoning behind the argument that being invited to a fellowship breakfast or being asked to read another denomination's religious tract is a grievous insult generally indicating a borderline willingness to serve as chief examiner at a hearing of the Spanish Inquisition. When the topic of Islam comes up, however, it seems that the liberal side of the clan has acquired dozens of close Muslim friends who are utterly peaceable and in desperate need of verbal defense from "belligerent" Christians.

Just like in the following video, which I found at Jihad Watch.

It really comes down to a question of enemy identification.

And the real enemy has stood up.

Big Dan's Big News Dec 29, 2009

Chris Floyd and Glenn Greenwald are not part of the corporate owned mainstream media, what shills like Rush Limbaugh call the "liberal media". They're not in the mainstream media because they're liberals, and the mainstream media isn't liberal. I know I keep repeating this: corporations aren't liberal, corporations OWN the mainstream media (the liberal media, it's called), the mainstream media isn't liberal but you're supposed to think it is, so you don't know who the real liberals are. The real liberals aren't in what is called the "liberal media". You see, if you believe that "liberal" is what Rush Limbaugh says it is, then you don't really know what "liberal" is. That's why they do this. Remember this: real liberals are ignored by the mainstream media. Real liberals don't call themselves "liberal". The mainstream and rightwing media then define a bunch of non-liberals as "liberals", like the Democrats for instance. Real conservatives are ignored by the mainstream media, too, and the mainstream and rightwing media (both controlled and owned by corporations) define a bunch of non-conservatives as "conservative". Real patriots don't call themselves "patriots", they don't dress in red, white, and blue, and wave flags, and they don't publish books with red, white and blue backgrounds.

Chris Floyd: Wow, that didn't take long at all. Scant days after the American war machine took the cloaking device off its direct military involvement in Yemen, we have an alleged attempted terrorist attack by an alleged attempted terrorist who, just scant hours after his capture, has allegedly confessed to getting his alleged attempted terrorist material from ... wait for it ... Yemen!

Chris Floyd: You want to stop the "radicalization" of young Muslims? It's simple: stop killing innocent Muslims in wars of domination all over the world. Stop running "covert ops" in every nation of the world -- murders, kidnappings, corruption and deception that make a howling mockery of the very "civilized values" these wars and ops purport to defend.

Glenn Greenwald: Each time the U.S. bombs a new location in the Muslim world, the same pattern emerges. First, officials from the U.S. or allied governments run to their favorite media outlet to claim -- anonymously -- that some big, bad, notorious, "top" Al Qaeda leader "may have been" or "likely was" killed in the strike, and this constitutes a "stinging" or "devastating" blow against the Terrorist group. These compliant media outlets then sensationalistically trumpet that claim as the dominant theme of their "reporting" on the attack, drowning out every other issue.

Glenn Greenwald: As a result, and by design, there is never any debate or discussion over the propriety or wisdom of these strikes.

Glenn Greenwald: In the wake of the latest failed terrorist attack on Northwest Airlines, one can smell the excitement in the air -- that all-too-familiar, giddy, bipartisan climate that emerges in American media discourse whenever there's a new country we get to learn about so that we can explain why we're morally and strategically justified in bombing it some more. "Yemen" is suddenly on every Serious Person's lips.

* DEEP THOUGHTS *
by Jack Handy

1. If they ever come up with a swashbuckling School, I think one of the courses should be Laughing, Then Jumping Off Something.
2. When you're riding in a time machine way far into the future, don't stick your elbow out the window, or it'll turn into a fossil.
3. It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
4. At first I thought, if I were Superman, a perfect secret identity would be "Clark Kent, Dentist," because you could save money on tooth X-rays. But then I thought, if a patient said, "How's my back tooth?" and you just looked at it with your X-ray vision and said, "Oh it's okay," then the patient would probably say, "Aren't you going to take an X-ray, stupid?" and you'd say, "Aw **** you, get outta here," and then he probably wouldn't even pay his bill.
5. One thing kids like is to be tricked. For instance, I was going to take my little nephew to Disneyland, but instead I drove him to an old burned-out warehouse. "Oh, no," I said. "Disneyland burned down." He cried and cried, but I think that deep down, he thought it was a pretty good joke. I started to drive over to the real Disneyland, but it was getting pretty late.
6. A good way to threaten somebody is to light a stick of dynamite. Then you call the guy and hold the burning fuse up to the phone. "Hear that?" you say. "That's dynamite, baby."
7. Why do people in ship mutinies always ask for "better treatment"? I'd ask for a pinball machine, because with all that rocking back and forth you'd probably be able to get a lot of free games.
8. I'd like to be buried Indian-style, where they put you up on a high rack, above the ground. That way, you could get hit by meteorites and not even feel it.
9. If I lived back in the wild west days, instead of carrying a six-gun in my holster, I'd carry a soldering iron. That way, if some smart-aleck cowboy said something like "Hey, look. He's carrying a soldering iron!" and started laughing, and everybody else started laughing, I could just say, "That's right, it's a soldering iron. The soldering iron of justice." Then everybody would get real quiet and ashamed, because they had made fun of the soldering iron of justice, and I could probably hit them up for a free drink.
10. I bet when the neanderthal kids would make a snowman, someone would always end up saying, "Don't forget the thick, heavy brows." Then they would all get embarrassed because they remembered they had the big hunky brows too, and they'd get mad and eat the snowman.

…More deep thoughts by Jack Handey...

What? Two Gitmo Guys Planned the Christmas Bomb Plot?

The only people to be surprised by this will be President Obama and his adoring, but witless, administrators and supporters.

Gee, Secretary Napolitano, I think we might have stumbled upon a clue to what went wrong with the Homeland Security system, before nothing went wrong with the Homeland Security system.

From ABC News:
Two of the four leaders allegedly behind the al Qaeda plot to blow up a Northwest Airlines passenger jet over Detroit were released by the U.S. from the Guantanamo prison in November, 2007, according to American officials and Department of Defense documents. Al Qaeda claimed responsibility for the Northwest bombing in a Monday statement that vowed more attacks on Americans.

American officials agreed to send the two terrorists from Guantanamo to Saudi Arabia where they entered into an "art therapy rehabilitation program" and were set free, according to U.S. and Saudi officials.

Guantanamo prisoner #333, Muhamad Attik al-Harbi, and prisoner #372, Said Ali Shari, were sent to Saudi Arabia on Nov. 9, 2007, according to the Defense Department log of detainees who were released from American custody. Al-Harbi has since changed his name to Muhamad al-Awfi.

Both Saudi nationals have since emerged in leadership roles in Yemen, according to U.S. officials and the men's own statements on al Qaeda propaganda tape

Both of the former Guantanamo detainees are described as military commanders and appear on a January, 2009 video along with the man described as the top leader of al Qaeda in Yemen, Abu Basir Naser al-Wahishi, formerly Osama bin Laden's personal secretary.
[snip]
The suspected bomber, 23-year-old Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, told FBI agents he was trained for his Christmas Day mission in Yemen by top leaders of al Qaeda who provided him with the explosive materials.
"The so-called rehabilitation programs are a joke," a U.S. diplomat said in describing the Saudi efforts with released Guantanamo detainees.

Saudi officials concede its program has had its "failures" but insist that, overall, the effort has helped return potential terrorists to a meaningful life.

One program gives the former detainees paints and crayons as part of the rehabilitation regimen.
A similar rehabilitation program in Yemen was stopped because so many of the detainees quickly joined with al Qaeda or its affiliates, the official said.
Yeah, that's what we want. Terrorist murderers "returned to a meaningful life." Or maybe deprived of life altogether, like they have in mind for the rest of us. One or the the other.

Note: Saudi Arabia. That is the country whose monarch, King Abdullah, Barack Hussein Obama was so eager to bow down to at a gathering of world leaders. Also the country whose countrymen paid for Obama's Harvard Law School Education.

Hat tip: Debbie Schlussel.

Big Dan's Big News Dec 28, 2009

RT - Russia Today television...YEP! I guess you have to watch Russian television to see a U.S. congressman speak out against these insane wars! Republican Congressman Dana Rohrabacher has to tell it like it is...on Russian television. The corporate owned U.S. media (the false liberal media) has too much conflict to show anti-war congressmen because other arms of their corporations are making too much profit off the wars. This is why I chucked the "liberal media" a long time ago. It's not liberal, it's a sham. Corporations own the media and since when are corporations liberal?

Reel Bad Arabs

This groundbreaking documentary dissects a slanderous aspect of cinematic history that has run virtually unchallenged from the earliest days of silent film to today's biggest Hollywood blockbusters. Featuring acclaimed author Dr. Jack Shaheen, the film explores a long line of degrading images of Arabs - from Bedouin bandits and submissive maidens to sinister sheikhs and gun-wielding "terrorists" - along the way offering devastating insights into the origin of these stereotypical images, their development at key points in US history, and why they matter so much today.

Christmas Bomber: No Passport. No Luggage. No Problem (UPDATED)

Returning from a Christmas holiday with kind, sane, loving people to news of a Christmas bomber.

Two passengers on Flight  253, a husband and wife who are both lawyers, are reporting that they witnessed a conversation indicating that the Christmas bomber had been permitted on the flight bound for Detroit without a passport.
A Michigan man who was aboard Northwest Airlines Flight 253 says he witnessed Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab trying to board the plane in Amsterdam without a passport.

Kurt Haskell of Newport, Mich. . . . confirmed he was on the flight by sending a picture of his boarding pass. He and his wife, Lori, were returning from a safari in Uganda when they boarded the NWA flight on Friday.
Haskell said he and his wife were sitting on the ground near their boarding gate in Amsterdam, which is when they saw Mutallab approach the gate with an unidentified man. . . .
While Mutallab was poorly dressed, his friend was dressed in an expensive suit, Haskell said. He says the suited man asked ticket agents whether Mutallab could board without a passport. “The guy said, ‘He’s from Sudan and we do this all the time.’”
Mutallab is Nigerian. Haskell believes the man may have been trying to garner sympathy for Mutallab’s lack of documents by portraying him as a Sudanese refugee.
The ticket agent referred Mutallab and his companion to her manager down the hall, and Haskell didn’t see Mutallab again until after he allegedly tried to detonate an explosive on the plane. . . .
About an hour after landing, Haskell said he saw another man being taken into custody. But a spokeswoman from the FBI in Detroit said Mutallab was the only person taken into custody.
Debbie Schlussel has been following this story:
You let a dude from a Muslim country and no luggage on a U.S.-bound plane with NO passport?!  Hellooooo . . .?
Apparently, for a terroist whose passport has been stamped too many times in Yemen or other terrorist hotbeds that UK Customs will no longer let him into Great Britain, it's a good idea to dump that pesky passport and start fresh. Who will stop him, especially if he is a member of a group to whom the rest of the world owes some kind of "social justice debt"?

The FBI is denying the story, but the lawyers who almost got blown out of the sky by the Christmas bomber have chosen to believe their lying eyes:
We are simply reporting what we saw, as we do not trust the government to always give all the facts and details. We know what we saw and heard. We are not stating anything but that. We do not know if he boarded without or with a passport. Kurt did hear the conversation about him not having one though.
Authorities are also denying that another Nigerian, with another twist in his shorts, was up to no good on Flight 253 two days after Christmas, because, as Janet Napolitano and the rest of the Obama administration would like us to believe, terrorists, like lightning, never strike in the same place twice (except for, say, the World Trade Center):
The man, who is in his 30s, reportedly locked himself in a toilet for more than an hour as the plane flew over the US.
Before locking himself in to the toilet the man had already been up and down to the same cubicle several times. Cabin crew became increasingly suspicious, broke the door down and dragged him out. He is then said to have become irate and verbally aggressive.
He was subdued and the pilot contacted the airport to say there was an emergency on board. Emergency vehicles gathered on the runway to meet the plane.
The passengers and crew were evacuated from the plane and the man was formally arrested. Officials said no explosive device had been found on the suspect.
The man had boarded the flight with no luggage.
I wonder if he had a passport.

Then again, I wonder what it was that took him more than an hour to flush.

Undocumented Muslims with no luggage boarding passenger jets, no problem. (Update: Just learned from Mark Steyn on Rush that this undocumented Muslim terrorist also bought a last-minute, one-way ticket for cash! No problem.)

While the rest of the passengers sweat it out, hoping that someone's shorts or shoes don't explode, or that flight attendents can bang the toilet door down in time.

This is what Americans get in the name of social justice?

Social justice for thee, but not for me? I'm sick of it.

How about a little profiling before the flight instead of during the flight?

Update: Kurt Haskell audio account available at Big Government.

DO YOUR PETS NEED SWEATERS?

No, contrary to appearances, this issue of Questions On Dogs and Cats is not a fashion show of sweaters for your canine and feline friends. Helpful Buckeye has received a few questions from readers about whether it's OK to have a cat or dog wearing a sweater and, if so, under what conditions would a sweater be considered appropriate "outerwear." These questions will be addressed a little later in this issue.

A few months ago, Helpful Buckeye informed our readers of a contest being sponsored by the folks at Wellsphere.com, a health blogging community that aspires to helping readers with any health questions they might have. Well, a lot of our readers here at Questions On Dogs and Cats must have gone to Wellsphere.com and cast their votes before the deadline of December 15th for Helpful Buckeye because yours truly has been been chosen as the Top Blogger in the Pet Health Community as part of the 2nd Annual People's HealthBlogger Awards. The special award badge can be seen in the column to the left. Thanks to all of you who took the time to go to the Wellsphere site and cast your vote for Helpful Buckeye!

Helpful Buckeye would like to remind our readers of the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) icon also in the left column that allows you quick and easy access to their web site for "Tips and Updates" of information relating to pet health and safety. Helpful Buckeye suggests you click into this site every time you make a visit to Questions On Dogs and Cats so that you don't miss any news that might be of interest to you and your pets. It's informative...and FREE!

Last week's poll question about what type of food you feed to your pet(s) produced very predictable results. Helpful Buckeye received 24 responses, 10 of which said "Dry," 9 said "Canned," 9 said "Semi-moist," and 7 said "Home-made." The reason the total is larger than 24 is that you were allowed multiple answers. Many of you actually feed your pets a combination of the 4 choices. Be sure to respond to this week's poll question in the column to the left.

In case you haven't heard all the holiday music you would like, here's one last chance to listen to Rascal, winner of the "World's Ugliest Dog" award, as he serenades you with his holiday sentiments: http://www.singinguglydog.com/

For those readers who like things a little bit out of this world, the folks in Roswell, New Mexico take their holiday spirit seriously...even the aliens from the UFOs are in the holiday mood.

CURRENT NEWS OF INTEREST

1) Well, we've all been waiting for the other shoe to fall as the world of the H1N1 influenza virus has expanded. With cats and ferrets recently being infected by the virus, could dogs be far behind? The answer came this past week as a dog in New York was shown to be positive for the Swine Flu. The American Veterinary Medical Association provides this update: http://www.avma.org/public_health/influenza/new_virus/default.asp

So far, the infection has only gone from affected humans to these animals. Epidemiologists are watching closely to determine if the infection starts going the other direction.

2) The American Kennel Club continues to remind pet owners to heed warnings about an alarming rise in "dog–nappings." State houses across America have taken notice and are proposing laws to toughen penalties for those who steal pets. For the rest of this disturbing story, and some valuable tips and suggestions from the AKC, go to: http://www.akc.org/news/index.cfm?article_id=4013

3) From the Mayo Clinic comes this good advice:

Health Tip Of The Week

Why is laughter good medicine? Humor can help reduce stress by providing a positive way of looking at problems. Humor can also help you perceive what's ridiculous or absurd in a situation. To promote humor in your life, follow these steps:

  • Be open to humor. Give yourself permission to laugh, even during tough times.

  • Surround yourself with humor. Try hanging cartoons in your workstation.

  • Seek out humor. Look for humor in everyday situations, but don't laugh at the expense of others. Or watch a favorite comedy DVD.

  • Share your humor. Tell a funny true story to a co-worker or friend.

During the extra stress of the holidays, humor can help you through the rough spots. Whether these rough spots are related to your pets or your human colleagues, a good dose of humor could be just what the doctor (or veterinarian) has ordered!

NON-MEDICAL CONCERNS

Now, on to the question about sweaters for your pets....

Dog and Cat Sweaters - Prissy Or Practical - Sensible Or Silly?
By Victoria Blackstone

Does your dog or cat really need to wear a sweater? Well, perhaps. Providing your pooch or kitty with a winter sweater may be just what the doctor ordered.

Many older dogs and cats, just like older people, have poor circulation and difficulty maintaining their body temperature. A sweater may be needed to keep them comfortable, even in a heated home. Arthritic dogs or cats, regardless of age, can have limited mobility that leads to inactivity. With insufficient exercise, they can lose body heat and their arthritic pain escalates. Simply wearing a sweater will help trap their body heat and ease some of their discomfort.

Similarly, many handicapped dogs and cats experience challenges to their mobility resulting in their inability to exercise adequately. Care must be given to find a well-fitting sweater that accommodates different handicaps. Crippled dogs and cats who spend much or all of their time lying down can develop sore spots from sweaters that have underbelly fasteners. A smooth, flat bellyband that goes underneath the body and fastens at the back will be their most comfortable option. Amputees will need sweaters that stay secure without slipping and restricting their movement.

Convalescent and postoperative dogs and cats may "kick the covers off", so to speak, while they are resting. Without a blanket covering them, they may get chilled which can slow the healing process. However, if they are wearing a sweater, it's like wrapping a blanket around them that stays in place and provides the constant warmth they need. Once they are restored to full health, wearing a sweater may be unnecessary.

Many dogs with very short hair can also benefit from the extra warmth of a sweater. Chihuahuas, miniature pinschers, and Italian greyhounds are examples from the toy-breed group of dogs that routinely wear sweaters. It's not only small dogs who need sweaters, but also other breeds including greyhounds and whippets. Larger dogs with short hair and slender builds are typically good candidates for needing a little more insulation in cold weather. In addition to purebred dogs, there are many mixed-breed dogs whose need for sweaters is just as important.

Anomalies of the dog world like the Chinese crested and the Peruvian Inca orchid are hairless dogs and the Sphynx cat is their hairless feline counterpart. With no body hair to insulate them, these dog and cat breeds certainly need the added warmth of a sweater. Yorkshire terriers, Maltese, silky terriers, and shih tzus are dogs that have hair, not fur. They lack the undercoat of other dogs, which acts as an insulating layer. Even when their hair is long, it does not always provide sufficient warmth because of the absence of a fur undercoat.

At first glance, dogs and cats wearing sweaters may appear excessively prissy. There are, however, valid reasons that support this choice as a sensible, caring gesture. Gone are the days when apparel for dogs or cats was reserved only for pampered pooches or chichi cats whose owners wished to make fashion statements. Not just for looks any more, dog and cat sweaters serve a useful purpose and may actually be just what the doctor ordered.

If any of you have a photo of your cat and/or dog wearing a sweater, feel free to send it to Helpful Buckeye at: dogcatvethelp@gmail.com and we'll publish it in our next issue.

1) While visiting Roswell, New Mexico this past week, Desperado and Helpful Buckeye saw this guy and his Basset Hound partner as they biked through town.

Marshall Lee, an Army veteran and his dog, Antigone, are making the 2000-mile journey from Chicago to San Diego. In addition to dogs, Helpful Buckeye also has a soft spot for bicyclists and their stories. 2) The ASPCA has released this short video to serve as a reminder of their extensive efforts toward animal welfare in the USA. Listen to this short summary of their year in 2009: https://secure2.convio.net/aspca/site/Donation2?df_id=7160&7160.donation=form1&JServSessionIdr004=r5yq1v3a92.app225b

3) Through the course of the last several months, Helpful Buckeye has published several AKC web polls about various dogs that were the most popular in their particular field of entertainment. Now, the AKC has compiled the final listing...and the "hippest dog of all pop culture" is: http://www.akc.org/news/index.cfm?article_id=4027

The web link lists all of the dogs involved in the voting for the various categories.

4) Also, while traveling in eastern New Mexico, Desperado and Helpful Buckeye became aware of the greyhound mascots of Eastern New Mexico University. Enjoy this video of them from the Albuquerque Journal: http://abqjournal.magnify.net/video/ENMUs-Canine-Mascots 5) Many of our readers enjoyed the issue back around Memorial Day... http://questionsondogsandcats.blogspot.com/2009/05/cemeteries-for-pets.html ...that discussed pet cemeteries and Helpful Buckeye still gets the occasional e-mail about that topic. There is also a famous pet cemetery in Calabasas, a suburb of Los Angeles, that received some press coverage on Christmas Day in the Arizona Republic: http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/news/articles/2009/12/25/20091225pets-cemetery1225.html

6) Let's finish with this last "news" segment of the year: http://www.pawnation.com/2009/12/25/dogs-with-santa-a-photo-collection/

If any of you have a photo with your dog or cat with Santa, consider sending it to Helpful Buckeye at: dogcatvethelp@gmail.com for publication in next week's issue.

SPORTS NEWS
Wow, it's hard to believe the Pittsburgh Steelers actually have a chance to make the playoffs after losing 5 games in a row...however, that's the situation going into the last weekend of the regular season.

The Ohio State Buckeyes will play Oregon this Friday in the Rose Bowl. Oregon can score a lot more points than the Buckeyes can, so our defense will have to show up for this game.

PERSONAL STUFF

On 26 DEC, Helpful Buckeye established a new personal record for biking miles in a year...my previous record was 4950 miles and the new one is 4973 miles and counting...since there are still several bike-riding days left in the year. Stay tuned for the final total, which will be posted in next week's issue.

From the Little America Hotel here in Flagstaff, enjoy this last view of some holiday lights:

Desperado and Helpful Buckeye are excited about participating in the annual New Year's Eve celebration in downtown Flagstaff, which revolves around the "dropping" of a 6-ft. tall pine cone from the roof of one of our historic hotels. It's always a happy event....

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
